Cooperative Care

for Vet Care, Grooming, and Handling

Help your dog feel safer and more comfortable with their care.

Care built on comfort, choice, and trust.

Cooperative care helps your dog become a willing participant in grooming, handling, and veterinary care. We break skills into small steps and teach your dog to communicate when they're ready - or when they need a break.

When handling feels overwhelming, routine care can become difficult for everyone. More choice and predictability can help build trust and reduce fear over time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What if my dog needs care before training is complete?

Your dog may need care while we’re still building their skills. We can coordinate with your veterinarian or groomer to support your dog’s comfort during necessary care. Your veterinarian may recommend medication or sedation to help care happen safely and with less stress. You can also book appointment support for me to attend, with your provider’s approval, and help advocate for your dog’s needs.

Why are sessions only 45 minutes?

Short sessions help dogs stay under threshold and finish on a positive note. Longer sessions can increase stress and make learning harder, especially for sensitive dogs. The focus is on quality, not endurance. Each 45-minute session includes approximately 30 minutes of cooperative care practice, with breaks as needed, and 15 minutes for questions and wrap-up.

How many sessions will my dog need?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some dogs make noticeable progress in just a few sessions, while others need ongoing support — especially if fear, avoidance, or past negative experiences have been building over time.

Dogs working through long-standing fear or trauma typically need more gradual, repeated sessions to build trust. Distracted puppies or dogs who are simply new to grooming may progress more quickly once they understand the routine. Your dog’s progress is also influenced by how much you’re able to practice the skills at home between sessions. Consistency and repetition are key.

Is this an actual grooming or medical appointment?

No—these are training sessions focused on building comfort with handling, grooming tools, and veterinary care routines. Practicing outside actual appointments gives us time to break things into small steps, offer choices, and pause when your dog needs a break—without the pressure of completing an exam or groom. This helps your dog build confidence at their pace, so they’re better prepared when appointments do need to happen.

What actually happens during a cooperative care session?

Each session is structured around your dog’s comfort level and specific training needs. We work in short, manageable steps to help your dog get used to handling (paws, ears, face, body) and tools. Consent-based practices are used throughout, meaning your dog is taught how to opt in to care, pause, or take a break at any point they need it. We adjust or stop whenever your dog shows signs of stress. The focus is on creating positive, predictable experiences rather than “pushing through.”

My dog has growled, snapped, bitten, or tried to bite. Can we still participate?

Yes, absolutely — and in many cases, cooperative care is exactly what those dogs need. Growling or snapping is a sign that a dog feels unsafe, not that they’re being “bad.” These sessions are designed to reduce that fear by giving dogs more control and clearer communication, while always prioritizing safety for everyone involved.

Can I be present during the session?

Yes! Cooperative care is meant to be done with the guardian. You’re encouraged to observe and ask questions. A big part of cooperative care is helping you understand your dog’s body language and learn how to support these skills at home, so progress doesn’t stop between sessions.

As your dog gains confidence, there may be a point later on where we may recommend having you step out. This helps your dog practice these skills with the grooming or veterinary professional and begin generalizing them to real world situations. This only happens when we agree your dog is ready and is always discussed with you in advance.

Is cooperative care only for puppies?

No. While starting early is helpful, dogs of any age can learn cooperative care skills. Adult dogs — even those with a long history of stressful grooming — can still make meaningful progress when sessions are paced appropriately.

What if my dog needs medication, supplements, or additional support?

Some dogs benefit from a combination of training, management, and veterinary support. If additional resources would be helpful, those conversations can be part of your overall plan.
